Happy Happy Joy Joy, It's Report Card Time
2004-10-15, 6:14 p.m.

Woo-hoo, its a happy Friday, yall! Its REPORT CARD day!

You get an inkling its a good day when your child climbs in the car EXCITED that its report card day.

You get another inkling its a good day when your child CANNOT WAIT for you to read her report card and is practically in tears over her reward for her efforts.

Language Arts: 96
Social Studies: 85
Science: 96
Math: 98

The comments are things such as Makes consistent progress and A pleasure to teach.

This is the same child who, two years ago, missed months of school with mono, had a math teacher totally unwilling to work with her to catch up, and finished the school year with an F in Math. Daughter felt like the most miserable creature on the planet when she saw that report card. And it wasnt her doing. She really tried, we worked with her (as much as we could, with both our fathers having been simultaneously diagnosed with cancer), and she had As and Bs in all her other subjects. But with so many absences, she had to repeat fourth grade. She did great.

Then today, the first report card of fifth grade. The one she really had to work for, no repeats, no Ive already done this last year. And her math grade is two points away from perfection.

Right now, there is not a happier child anywhere in the Universe. I guarantee it.

Son did all right as well, but he has one of those unconventional report cards. He doesnt have actual grades, but the M for mastery or NI for needs improvement, etc. He has almost all Ms (or the equivalent thereof), with a few minor glitches regarding behavior. My favorite is mumbles inappropriate comments regarding the schoolwork he just doesnt want to do, which is most likely all schoolwork presented to him. Well, whaddaya expect, him to smile and say THANK YOU MAAM MAY I HAVE ANOTHER? What are we adults thinking, trying to cram larnin into a brain that was developed purely for fun? Peskies like textbooks and worksheets take away valuable video game time. Grownups should know better. Commence grumbling.
